Fatback - Is This the Future (1983)

The Fatback Band (later known as Fatback) is an American funk and disco band popular in the 1970s and 1980s, known for R&B hits like "(Do the) Spanish Hustle," "I Like Girls," "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)," "Backstrokin'," and "I Found Lovin'." Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is considered the first commercially released hip hop single. Formed in New York City in 1970 by drummer Bill Curtis, the band's original lineup included Johnny King (guitar), Johnny Flippin (bass), George Williams (trumpet), Earl Shelton (sax), George Adams (flute), and Gerry Thomas (keyboards). They signed to Perception Records and had a hit with "Street Dance." In the mid-1970s, they shifted towards disco with hits like "Keep On Steppin'," "Yum, Yum (Give Me Some)," and "(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop." They signed with Spring/Polydor and achieved success with singles like "Party Time," "The Booty," "Double Dutch," and their first top ten hit, "I Like Girls." In the 1980s, they had hits with "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)," "Backstrokin'," "Take It Any Way You Want It," and "Spread Love." They found substantial success in the UK, with "I Found Lovin'" reaching the top ten. Despite their American pop success being limited, the band continued to perform, including concerts in the UK as recently as 2019.
